When starting on your landscape, especially if you don’t have any clue as to what you would like it to eventually look like, questions like – ‘Where do I even start?’ or, ‘How do I start my design?’ can be like a heavy weight on your mind.
Every landscaper uses different designs and typically follows a certain set of principles and rules to get started. You too can achieve success in using a very similar set of principles and rules. Start with any walk-way paths, driveways, access routes to exterior doors that are being used. When laying out these areas try to think of what you’d like to accomplish. Do you want to create a new path or walk-way or do you wan to just brighten up the one you currently have. In many cases starting with this will help you to create the initial framework and plan that you can use to design around.
Obviously, if your landscape updates don’t include walk-ways or paths, the above ideas wouldn’t be applicable. But, the point is, pick a central location and design from that using it as your starting framework.

This can be especially important if you are trying to market and sell your home.
Paths and walkways also aid in creating borders and boundaries for you landscape. This is turn gives you an excellent starting point to where you just have to design around them. The same also goes for driveways and other area’s to park. You can take advantage of these by plants flower beds on either side of the driveway edge. This can create a very appealing look in itself.

If you have some type of a path or walkway leading to a front or back patio, make the walkway’s curve or wind through your flower beds can give visitors and illusion of more space, distance, and travel. This idea can be especially utilized in creating even smaller gardens or landscapes.
